I'm not sure I'm the best person to act as a mentor though. I'm a devotee of Jane Jacobs and enjoy sharing here wisdom, but that's about as far as my expertise goes in this area. I'm not too familiar with manufacturing or preserving buildings. Your best bet is to find a historic preservation office in your city and/ or state and see what resources and efforts are already being made and see if there are locals who can act as mentors.

Hope this helps!

Re: Quick Take: New ideas must use old buildings

I so agree Yuri, would you consider having an on line mentor forum for those individuals in communities around the USA, wanting to do the same thing?
I would love to manufacture my eco clothing lines and eco friendly products in the USA and turn old factories into new again, revitalize and rejuvenate communities, create jobs - especially now. Please let us know!

Re: Quick Take: New ideas must use old buildings

Couldn't agree more - hence: http://www.theplacestation.org... (all welcome and encouraged to make use - no matter where they are in the world!). I am actually moving into this space this week and I am so excited to hear about the history of it! My company builds "Vintage Industrial" inspired furniture so I think it's a perfect fit for the building. Sprawl exists because of subsidy. First, stop the subsidy. Transit fares exists to discourage use. This is the biggest sprawl subsidy. Remove the fares. Use buses. When the playing field is level, it will be obvious where to put the rail projects.

Re: Wanted: careful seeding

That's my old hood, E. 40th and Madison Avenue. I think that "Her Secret is Patience," the public art in Civic Space Park was intended to be a focal point, but it hasn't lived up to the hype... at least yet.

Re: Focus

What is or are the focal points in Phoenix? They were the perfect party location because of the mystery and age. I noticed that an entire block or two has been demolished since I went to those parties, plus a huge parking garage has been built. Somehow the raw, underground vibe has been lost to some degree. I do hope that the old buildings can be saved.
